Question: mp3 and iPods

I have a question regarding a regular mp3 player and one of those made by Apple - iPod.

I have a SamSung mp3 player, what I do now is I copy my songs from my CD into WMP then I rip them and put them into my mp3 player. If I buy one of those iPod Nano or Shuffle, can I do the same or I have to subscribe to iTune to download THEIR songs?

Also, can anyone show me how do I download podcast online into my SamSung. Thanks in advance.
